Genealogy Club: Italian Research

Genealogy Club: Italian Research Online

Presented by Deborah Carl.

Deborah is the daughter of professional genealogist Elizabeth Petty Bentley. As a child, she would go to libraries and cemeteries with her mother. The libraries weren’t so bad, but mom didn’t appreciate her running around the graveyard and climbing on the stones. She told Deborah she’d have nightmares if she kept doing it. Sure enough… Now Deborah is careful where she walks as she takes photos for FindAGrave.

Since Mom’s Ancestry Tree has 104,135 individuals and counting, Deborah decided to work on her husband’s genealogy. He is Italian, so in 2000, armed with a twenty-five cent Italian research guide she bought at the Family History Center, and Italian and Latin dictionaries checked out of the library, she learned to read the records.

To Deborah, genealogy is like doing a jigsaw puzzle, so for fun and relaxation, she would spend her free time connecting everyone. This lead to the creation of the Facebook page "Genealogy in Acerra, Italy" which now has 416 members, and where members have created links and indexes to help each other with their research.
