Anti-Profanity Leagues in the early 20th Century by Evan Christensen In-Person
Our Summer theme - Color Your World - continues with this presentation on "colorful" language. Join Evan Christensen, a student researcher from the University of New Hampshire, for a lively exploration of how Americans once tried to clean up “colorful” language. In the early 1900s, reformers launched nationwide Anti-Profanity Leagues, distributing pledge cards and mottoes to fight public swearing. Discover the forgotten story of this moral crusade, and what it reveals about language, values, and social change in America.
