Timekeeping and Timekeepers in Early New England

Timekeeping and Timekeepers in Early New England In-Person

It's 2024!  Do you have some free time?  Are you looking for a way to kill time? Too much time on your hands?  It's high time you join us at the library.  You'll have a whale of a time as clock expert Bob Frishman joins us for this presentation on Timekeeping and Timekeepers in Early New England.

With more than 100 digital images, the lecture offers a history of clocks and watches in New England beginning with the arrival of the Mayflower up to the adoption of standard time by the railroads in the late 19th century.  Additional information includes Henry David Thoreau's banjo clock and his thoughts on the regularly scheduled trains passing the cabin on Walden Pond. Mr. Frishman will also provide a special focus on clocks in New Hampshire. The lecture will be followed by an informal "road-show" session when attendees' clocks and watches can be identified and evaluated. Bring your old wind-up clocks and watches; please no battery-powered or plug-in items.

Bob Frishman entered the world of horology on Thanksgiving 1980 when he met a collector/dealer/repairer who started him down the path that has led to nearly 8,000 timepieces repaired and more than 1,700 vintage clocks and watches sold.  In recent years, he has reduced his clock-repair activities and now devotes his time to research, writing, travel, lecturing, and conference planning.  You can learn more about his extensive career and experience at bell-time.com.
